This photo of Rupert makes him look huge. He was actually only around 10hh, but I started walking at 9 months so looked tiny next to him. He was a wonderful shaggy shetland cross who had come out of the local Asti Stud Riding School. Utterly fed up with being confined to the yard during the foot and mouth outbreak, he needed a home where he’d do nothing but hacking.
We shared him with two other families and enjoyed long walks on the Ridgeway taking it turns to ride him or run along in front. He developed a taste for chocolate digestives during our many picnics. When he left us he moved to Scotland, lost an eye and became a companion pony.
